Based in New York all fall, comedian Mathieu Dufour wondered if the Big Apple was going to “turn upside down” on the evening of the American election, when The Journal contacted him on Tuesday afternoon. “I can’t wait to see if there will be repercussions,” said the man who took the opportunity to announce a new Christmas show with a choir of 100 singers.
Mathieu Dufour moved to New York “for pleasure” in mid-September and he will be there until the end of the month. When he decided to spend the fall on vacation in the American metropolis – a dream he had had for years – the comedian did not at all think that he was going to fully experience the American election on evening of November 5.
“It’s not really in my interests,” he admits. It was my friends who told me it would be intense.”
“The atmosphere was really weird”
In recent weeks, he met Americans who explained to him their reality and how the country worked. A few hours before the polls closed, what was the atmosphere like in New York?
“I went for a run earlier and I was looking at the cover live on Fox, he said. I don’t know what to expect. I don’t know if the city will turn upside down. […] The only time I saw a big difference was when I walked past Madison Square Garden the night Trump held his rally. The atmosphere around was really weird. Everyone was shouting, there was a lot of security, a lot of police. I changed streets.”
To follow the progress of the results, the comedian thought of going to watch it with new friends in New York who are encouraging Kamala Harris. “They might be having a night out, but I don’t know yet. I don’t really have a plan.”
Strangers sing Christmas
Regardless of the outcome of the election, Mathieu Dufour will return to Quebec on November 28. Two weeks later, on December 15, he will present the show Mathieu Dufour’s choirat Saint-James United Church, in downtown Montreal.
That evening, the comedian will be accompanied by a choir of 100 singers. These are the spectators who attended the secret show that Math Duff presented at the Terminal Comédie Club the day before his departure for New York.
Having improvised a song with the audience, the comedian was impressed with the result and told those present that they should form a choir. A few months later, he put his idea into action. “It’s 100 strangers who will unite for Christmas joy!” he said laughing.

Music and jokes
Mathieu Dufour has already chosen the songs that his choir will sing at church. “It’s a playlist dream with more Franco than Anglo, he says. These are the Christmas classics.”
Of course, you can expect the comedian to also improvise a few jokes on stage. “I’m going to have the priest’s podium with the microphone on it,” he said. I’ll be able to talk between songs. It is certain that there are jokes who are going to slip into all of this.”
The show The Christmas choir by Mathieu Dufour will take place on December 15, at 4 p.m., at the Saint-James United Church in Montreal. For tickets: https://my.weezevent.com/la-chorale-de-mathieu-dufour
