Rabat – Flamenco enthusiasts met Monday evening at the Mohammed V National Theater in Rabat with a vibrant performance by the Spanish female quintet LaboratoriA, as part of the third edition in Morocco of the World Flamenco Congress.
Organized by the Spanish Embassy and the Cervantes Institute, with the support of the Spanish Ministry of Culture and in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication of Morocco, this edition highlights the female gaze and artistic reinvention in traditional flamenco.
Through shows and cultural activities organized in seven cities in the Kingdom, this Congress seeks to bring Moroccans closer to the diversity and authenticity of this emblematic Spanish art, and more particularly its new forms worn by women.
In a statement to MAP on this occasion, José María Davó Cabra, cultural advisor at the Spanish embassy in Rabat, was delighted with this unique edition.
“We want to offer the Moroccan public a glimpse of the best of flamenco. This year’s edition stands out for its feminine and innovative character. These are groups composed and led by women, like the one we are going to listen to this evening. They explore new forms of expression and highlight the role of women in society and in flamenco,” he underlined.
In a similar statement, Anastasio Sánchez Zamorano, director of the Cervantes Institute in Rabat, indicated that “it is important to carry out these activities, because they constitute a bridge between Spain and Morocco, a country that loves flamenco , particularly for its Arab and Sephardic roots”.
For her part, Ana Brenes, singer of the group LaboratoriA, told MAP that “it is a privilege that we are here in Rabat, and we are delighted that there is a place for this music which identifies us and us unit. This project, born in Barcelona, is a response to our creative needs”.
For the Spanish artist, flamenco is “our common language” but we can always demonstrate creative freedom “so that unique things arise, like those in our current show entitled ‘What does the girl want?’”.
Formed in 2017 in Barcelona, the LaboratoriA quintet, formed by five women and considered a pioneer in the feminist exploration of flamenco, offers a deconstruction of traditional roles through art and performance.
Organized in Morocco for the third consecutive year, from October 31 to November 27, the World Flamenco Congress offers a rich program of shows, workshops and conferences in several Moroccan cities.
This edition will make Morocco the global epicenter of flamenco throughout the month of November. A major celebration which places the Kingdom in an international cultural dynamic, strengthening artistic dialogue and exchanges between the two Kingdoms.
