Known for their hits “Mad World” and “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”, Tears For Fears released “Songs For A Nervous Planet” on October 25, consisting mainly of live tracks. Enough to delight a new generation of fans who discovered the British group via social networks.
Founded in Bath in 1981, the group Tears For Fears, led by Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal, quickly found success with the song “Mad World”, which reached the top of the English charts in 1982. Followed by “Shout” in 1984 , which will be number one in several countries including Switzerland, then “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” in 1985. Many other hits will follow, such as “Head Over Heels” in 1985, until the separation of the duo in 1991. Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal no longer get along. They continued to make music separately before resuming Tears for Fears in the 2000s.
“Everybody Loves a Happy Ending” is the reunion album in 2004. It will be necessary to wait until 2022 for the release of their seventh studio album “The Tipping Point”. As for their new live album “Songs For A Nervous Planet”, it includes four new songs recorded in the studio, followed by 18 tracks recorded during a concert in the town of Franklin, in the state of Tennessee in the United States, in 2023. The performance was also filmed and broadcast in several selected cinemas around the world on the day of the disc’s release.

Social networks, a new lease of life
Today, Tears for Fears manages to fill stadiums and large venues, which was not always the case. A revival which could be due to social networks and new generations. On TikTok, the song “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” is trending in 2022. Many young users then discover the group and propel the hit once again to the top of the charts, this time on streaming platforms.
“We released this song in 1985. It was number 1 in the US and number 2 in the UK. This week it reached the top 50 on Spotify. Thank you TikTok! We love that you enjoy the song so much than us”, declares the group via its own account in a message intended for their young fans. A new popularity which is confirmed on “Songs For A Nervous Planet”, where we can hear screams coming from very young voices when the first notes of the famous hit sound.
Words always so personal
The four new tracks appearing at the beginning of the album are written by Roland Orzabal. On rather classic pop music, the singer and songwriter proclaims his love for his wife in “Emily Said” and “The Girl That I Call Home”. “It’s been years since my wife Emily asked me to try writing a song for her,” confides Roland Orzabal to English webzine Classic Pop. So I ended up doing it […] but I couldn’t find a title. One evening I went to bed and asked the sky: please give me a hand, give me a good title. I woke up the next day to ‘The Girl That I Call Home’ and my wife loves it.”

Enough to balance with the melancholic “Astronaut”, which speaks of escape and the pessimistic “Say Goodbye To Mom And Dad”, which expresses a dark vision of the future.
