Singer Sylvie Vartan, who turned 80 in August, is preparing to give the final concerts of her career. An “irrevocable” decision.
After having “made all her dreams come true”, Sylvie Vartan gives, at the age of 80, six final Parisian concerts, from November 8 to 10 at the Dôme de Paris and from January 24 to 26 at the Palais des Congrès.
Among the most famous French-speaking artists, the yéyé idol puts an “irrevocable” end to a 63-year career, marked by around fifty albums, 40 million records sold and 2,000 magazine covers, more than Brigitte Bardot and Catherine Deneuve.
An “irrevocable” decision, as she indicated to AFP in an interview. “I’ve lived on a volcano since I started, 63 years ago. I’ve done so much that, at some point, you have to calm down a little, it’s time.”
“I can’t continue at this crazy pace, even if I feel the same enthusiasm. I’m starting to get tired. For the moment, I’m still singing well but it’s inevitable that it will stop one day.”
The singer announced in January 2024 her wish to stop performing after a farewell tour, entitled “I am bowing out”. In an interview with Le Parisien, she expressed her anxiety about doing “one concert too many”.
“Monster time differences are good when you’re 20… I want to offer decent things, in the color I like and in the way I like. I definitely don’t want to drag myself on stage! “, she told AFP.
“A musical comedy”
Giving some information on these farewell concerts, the interpreter of The most beautiful to go dancing specifies:
“It will resemble a musical comedy with the magical moments of my career which has been quite romantic. Everything that I shared with the public from the age of 17 with the song ‘Panne d’essence’ in duet with Frankie Jordan. For these farewells, I am working with my choreographer Redha Benteifour, who was one of my dancers.”
If she refuses to divulge the names of the guests who will join her on stage, so that “it remains a surprise”, Sylvie Vartan confides that there will “obviously be at least David” (Hallyday, her son, Editor’s note), “with a orchestra of around fifteen musicians, my singers and my dancers.”
Asked by AFP about the favorite songs in her repertoire, the singer cites the emblematic Maritzaon “(his) childhood in Bulgaria”. “This song is currently used in hundreds of thousands of videos on TikTok. It’s incredible and completely crazy.”
