“Boxing makes its cinema” published by Chronica editions, immerses you in the world of boxing through black and white photos of 50 renowned artists from the world of cinema who play boxer, trainer, speaker, manager… The photographer Frédéric Andrieu and Stepan Kuleshov, one of the five co-authors, tell us about it.
For the first time, boxing meets cinema through photography. “Boxing makes its cinema” illustrates the unique link between these two arts which have marked numerous films and captivated crowds. Fifty artists including Jean Dujardin, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Patrick Bruel, José Garcia, François Damiens, Gérard Lanvin, Yolande Moreau, Annie Cordy immerse themselves in the world of boxing to offer strong and touching images.
It is also a photo of Jean Dujardin which is revealed exclusively in the RTL info Avec Vous. The actor is immortalized in full training, hitting a speed pear, a tool that helps sharpen the boxer’s dexterity. The lively and focused look makes it a memorable shot. “It’s part of the character“, comments Frédéric Andrieu who specifies that he sought to capture the look of Jean Dujardin.
“I think that the naturalness of the actors and the boxers, it was a real alchemy, there was never really a search for composition, they gave of themselves. It’s pure happiness and moments of generosity that we recorded“, explains Frédéric Andrieu.
François Damiens
Another notorious photo presented in our newspaper is that of François Damiens, between two rounds, sitting with his coach and what appears to be his doctor. The black and white photo captures the unforgiving actor, his features furrowed. “We were especially attracted to artists who have heart and who love the sense of sharing, I think that comes across well in the book and in the photos“, recognizes Stepan Kuleshov, co-author and model.
“We really went for a total improvisation. Everyone from the non-profit organization gave their opinion and then we gave free rein to this boxer who loves cinema and the actor who was passionate about boxing. It gave rise to some surprising scenes“, explains the photographer.
The book “Boxing makes its cinema” is released on October 31, 2024. It is sold at the price of €39.99, as well as 150 numbered copies at the price of €59. The profits will be donated to support the boxers of the Belgian Golden Gloves organization as well as an association which fights against cancer.
