While last night’s MTV Video Music Awards ceremony honored the biggest artists in the current music world, it was also an opportunity for stars to make a splash on the red carpet.

New York Fashion Week wrapped up on Wednesday, September 11, giving way to a whole other fashion marathon on the outskirts of the city. After a ceremony in New Jersey last year, the MTV Music Awards moved to the UBS Arena in New York, hosted by rapper Megan Thee Stallion. An evening punctuated by a stylish red carpet, followed by musical performances by Sabrina Carpenter and others, and nominations that put Taylor Swift in the lead, followed closely by Post Malone and Eminem.

Alongside the awards show, the VMAs have been an opportunity for celebrities to create these memorable fashion moments for 40 years. Remember Lady Gaga’s iconic meat dress in 2010 or more recently, Doja Cat’s spiderweb Monse dress in 2023.

Artists conquered the VMAs red carpet

Marked by nostalgia, this cult evening of pop culture saw several throwbacks in terms of looks. Sabrina Carpenter, nominated for the Song of the Year award for her song “Espresso”, arrived in a vintage Bob Mackie dress, originally worn by Madonna at the Oscars in 1991. We also think of the black mini dress in (very) transparent lace Roberto Cavalli worn by Tate McRae, in homage to the queen of pop, Britney Spears, who wore this same look by Dolce & Gabbana at the VMAs in 2001.

One of the most iconic silhouettes of the evening was Taylor Swift’s, who won no fewer than 12 nominations last night. The singer caused a sensation in a tartan Dior look from the resort 2025 collection with a revisited and more daring version of the iconic yellow tartan ensemble worn by Alicia Silverstone in the 90s hit film “Clueless”.

Part of the red carpet last night went dark, giving way to the current goth trend. Chappell Roan, nominated in the category “Best New Artist,” opted for a very goth-glam Y/Project sheer look, like Camila Cabello who wore a black dress with a lace veil by Tony Ward Couture. Here’s a look back at the best looks from the 2024 VMAs.
