Cannes 2024: Palme d’Or for the modern Pretty Woman Anora, and two prizes for the film by Jacques Audiard

The 77th Cannes Film Festival presented its awards this Saturday evening on the stage of the Grand Théâtre Lumière. The Jury chaired by director Greta Gerwig awarded the 2024 Palme d’Or to “Anora” by Sean Baker.

End clap for the 77th Cannes Film Festival. After twelve days of cinema, discoveries, emotions, climbing the steps, glamor and above all views on the world, the Jury chaired by Greta Gerwig chose its 2024 Palme d’Or.

It’s Anora by Sean Baker, the journey of a sex worker between New York and Las Vegas led by the luminous Mikey Madison, which follows Anatomy of a Fall by Justine Triet.

Aged 53, the American filmmaker, leader of US indie cinema, had previously been revealed by Tangerine, The Florida Project and Red Rocket. He gave Hollywood its first Palme d’Or in thirteen years and Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life.

Palme d’Or – “Anora” by Sean Baker

It’s a film that “bewitched” Geta Gerwig’s Jury. Sean Baker receives the 2024 Palme d’Or for Anoramodern Pretty Woman and fairy tale in the middle of the night and sex which establishes the cinema of the director, new leader of American indie cinema.

Grand Prize – “All We Imagine as Light” by Payal Kapadia

This is the first Indian film presented in competition at Cannes for thirty years: All We Imagine As Lightsoft, tender and luminous films from Payal Kapadia, won the Grand Prix, “silver medal” at the Cannes Film Festival. The director had already won the Golden Eye, recognizing the best documentary on the Croisette, in 2021 with A night of knowing nothing.

What is it about ? A nurse in Mumbai, Prabha sees her daily life turned upside down when she receives a gift from her husband whom she has not seen for years. For her part, Anu, her young roommate, is looking in vain for a place in the city to share a little privacy with her fiancé. During a stay in a seaside resort, will they finally be able to let their desires be expressed?

Jury Prize – “Emilia Perez” by Jacques Audiard

“Long live cinema, long live Mexico, long live Emilia Perez!” The jury awards a second prize (it’s rare!) to Emilia Perez by Jacques Audiard, definitely one of the favorites of this 77th edition. Stuck in a taxi (!), the French filmmaker sent a message greeting his actresses, and added a new prize to his Cannes collection after having already received a Palme d’Or (Dheepan), a Grand Prix (A Prophet) and a Screenplay Award (A very discreet hero).

What is it about ? Overqualified and overexploited, Rita uses her talents as a lawyer in the service of a large firm more inclined to launder criminals than to serve justice. But an unexpected exit door opens to her, helping the cartel leader Manitas to get out of business and carry out the plan he has been secretly refining for years: finally becoming the woman he always dreamed of being. .

Special Jury Prize – “The Seeds of the Wild Fig Tree”

It took him 28 days to reach the Cannes Film Festival, while a sentence of five years in prison and flogging was announced against him by the Iranian regime. Touched by the price but overwhelmed by the sadness of what his people are experiencing, and more particularly the team of his feature film Wild fig tree seeds, Mohammad Rasoulof receives a Special Jury Prize which echoes the situation in Iran, but more widely in the world.

What is it about ? In a Tehran shaken by political and social unrest. The investigating judge Iman discovers that his weapon has disappeared, he suspects his wife and daughters, imposing draconian measures which put a strain on family ties.

Best Director Award – Miguel Gomes for “Grand Tour”

Cinema is a collective art. The Portuguese filmmaker Miguel Gomes proves it more than ever by inviting his entire team to go on stage, while he receives the Directing Prize for Grand Tour. He also paid tribute to Portuguese cinema, and in particular Manoel de Oliveira.

Best Actor Award – Jesse Plemons in “Kinds of Kindness”

In the recent Civil War, there is only one sequence that impressed the retinas of all the spectators of Alex Garland’s film. Camera d’Or – “Armand”

Each year, the Caméra d’Or rewards the best first film, all selections combined. This year it is awarded to Norwegian drama Armand of Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel worn by Renate Reinsve, revelation of Julie (in 12 chapters) in 2021.

What is it about ? When an incident occurs at school, the parents of young Armand and Jon are summoned by the management. But everyone has a hard time explaining what really happened. The children’s stories conflict, their points of view clash, to the point of shaking the adults’ certainties…
