Between 150 and 200 million dollars: this is the net loss that Warner Bros. should pay off because of “Joker: Folie à Deux”, estimate several American media specializing in cinema. Just two weeks after its theatrical release, the film saw its revenues drop by 80%. So far, it has only grossed $165 million worldwide. Not even enough to allow the studio to cover its costs.

The feature film, with Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix in the main roles, was financed by Warner studios to the tune of 200 million dollars, to which is added 100 million for the promotional campaign. According to current projections, the film should ultimately bring in between 210 and 215 million, while it would need to reach 375 to 400 million to be profitable, reports Variety.

In a press release, Warner assures that the failure of the “Joker” sequel released in 2019 is not as bitter as it seems. “The film continues to be shown in theaters. It is released in China this week and will continue to generate revenue throughout its screenings and ancillary releases,” the studio said in a statement.

For comparison, the first “Joker” cost $65 million to produce and grossed nearly $250 million after just three days in theaters, and more than a billion in total worldwide. It remains, to this day, one of the most lucrative comic book film adaptations in the history of cinema. The film also earned its hero Joaquin Phoenix the Oscar for best actor in 2020.
