It was definitely not good to live in England in the seventies. Inflation, particularly the rise in housing prices, made daily life for the working classes untenable. And for residents of the north of the country, the danger was even worse: between 1975 and 1980, 13 of them (at least, perhaps more) were murdered in the street by the same man. A serial killer nicknamed by the media “the Yorkshire Ripper”, in reference to the famous London Jack with whom he had in common the targeting of women, particularly prostitutes.
