Broadcasting African series: an Ivorian producer calls for synergy of actions

(APS) – The Director of Ivorian Television Broadcasting (RTI) Distribution, Ana Ballo called, Wednesday, for a synergy of actions to facilitate the broadcast of African series, a niche which is evolving “well” and which RTI is pioneering, she said.

”(…) today we must learn to come together, develop an economic model, broadcast on local platforms with local content in partnership with broadcasters”, she pleaded to the French institute of Dakar.

She spoke during a panel on the theme ”The diffusion of the African series, state of play” organized as part of season 2 of the ”Dakar series” festival (October 7-12).

For Ms. Ballo, it is about mastering the local distribution tool to conquer the African market first, believing that each time we produce it is not a question of having a complex and going conquer ”Netflix or Amazon”, American platforms for online sales of artistic works including cinema.

”The market is here [en Afrique]in five years the market will no longer exist on the other side, it is here, so let’s start to be present as a player in the sector, to produce intelligently, to design to cost [la conception à coût objectif]. That is to say, we have a great story, we want to adapt it, what can our market absorb in terms of budget to produce,” explained Ana Ballo.

The person responsible for co-productions and distribution of African content at RTI, a public service media group, calls for adapting and dubbing, for example, film productions from Nigeria and other English-speaking countries in Africa and vice versa.

”There is the possibility today of adapting works that have had success such as + My family + (Ivorian series) that it be remade in English by the Showmax channel of the Nigerian producer Victor Sanchez Aghahowa present here for example , why not ? This could be a hit. +Les Bobodioufs+ (Burkinabe series). These are successes that we have had and which can work well in English-speaking countries,” says Ana Ballo.

An idea shared by Nigerian producer Victor Sanchez Aghahowa who invites networking and co-productions between African actors.
