“The Simpsons predicted it”: why we should be wary of this trend

The Simpsons series would have predicted major events for the year 2024? On the Internet, some people try to make people believe this through modified images and videos. Some recent news events have also been presented as unsubstantiated Simpsons predictions.

In recent years, the series The Simpsons has been given the power of prediction. According to this trend, the creators of Simpson would have the ability to see the future or would multiply self-fulfilling predictions.

Unfortunately, in reality, the reality is less sensational. For good reason, if the series really “predicted” certain events, the rate of correct predictions turns out to be relatively meager.

In addition, The Simpsons are now the target of all kinds of misappropriations. Victim of their so-called power of prediction and a major craze around this trend, the comedy series now finds itself mobilized to spread false information and generate interactions on social networks.

For example, this image which has been circulating for several days on social networks. We can see there: the so-called prediction of Joe Biden’s death in 2024, Homer carrying a Ukrainian flag in the middle of a battlefield and a nuclear bomb falling on Springfield on May 5, 2024 (and therefore on our world, according to this trend).

Small problem (or rather fortunately), all these images have been modified, the events presented above are not developed at any time in the series.

Generally speaking, these Simpsons diversions play on fear to generate views and interactions. We can thus notice a thumbnail of a YouTube video, entitled “ The Simpsons’ scary predictions for 2024 “, which implies that the series predicts major changes regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In reality, the comedy series did not deal with this subject, the image was modified to make it appear otherwise. Let us point out, however, that the video has 2.3 million views.

Similarly, a thumbnail from another YouTube video suggests that The Simpsons is predicting a major attack by China on American soil. Here too, this image has been modified and does not correspond to any event imagined in The Simpsons. The video in question has 1.3 million views.

These diversions play on the fear that the Simpsons’ predictions will come true and on a tense global geopolitical situation. Unsurprisingly, we therefore find so-called predictions of atomic bomb drops.

Finally, we can note that a certain message is copied and pasted on social networks, and more particularly on X. https://twitter.com/QFs_Global/status/1784493878483304554 claims that the creator of The Simpsons is “ a former CIA agent » and that “ statisticians collected data that 89% of the series’ predictions coincided with reality “. Needless to say, this information does not reflect any reality (well, we cannot verify whether Matt Groening is a former member of the CIA, but there is still little chance).

The fabrications concerning the Simpsons predictions are therefore spreading on social networks and can affect any current topic. Recently, we were able to see that the Simpsons predicted the floods that occurred in Dubai. Of course, this image was fabricated.

The Simpsons also allegedly predicted the collapse of the Baltimore bridge following a boating accident. But, as pointed out https://twitter.com/NoContextHumans/status/1773226936820510857 present on X, this image was created by artificial intelligence. We can notice that Lisa’s hair is represented by 10 spikes, and not 8 as in the series.

In any case, it’s probably best to take a step back from the so-called Simpsons predictions. With more than 760 episodes under the clock, the creators of the series have sometimes hit the nail on the head, and brilliantly. However, the rate of correct predictions is not really enough to generate enthusiasm. Hank Azaria, the American voice of Moe, Chief Wiggum and the comic book salesman, explained to Comicbook: “ The show made, like, 7,482 predictions and 12 came true, so actually our success rate isn’t that high, really. “.

Now it’s time to go back to watching The Simpsons, while avoiding edited images and clips taken out of context.
