The La Comédie du livre festival 10 days in May begins this weekend, the Tropisme festival continues, Arlette ton cirque offers a circus day, and on Friday evening, it’s a hut evening or scratch atmosphere. Here are five events from Friday May 10 to Sunday May 12.

The Jam Paillotes

The 2024 start of the Paillottes du Jam was given yesterday. A second evening is planned for this Friday. On the program: a garden concert, the opportunity to enjoy an outdoor bar, and two indoor concerts. The evening begins almost gently with Joz. The young Montpellier takes on soul-jazz, pop, world music and rock sounds. Change of atmosphere in the large room with the afrobeat of Ajamo. The group led by Thomas Vahle, ethnomusicologist, saxophonist and tambin flautist of Mory Kanté, takes on Afrobeat from Nigeria and other well-known pieces animating West Africa. The people of Toulouse from Super Panela mix tradition and modernity by navigating between Afro Colombian and tropical sounds.

This Saturday, Sophie Desmarets Park, you have an appointment with the circus. On the program are shows led by professionals but also numbers created by amateurs or talented beginners. They need an audience to test themselves. They will have one hour for this, time for a cabaret which begins at 2 p.m. Then, from solo to duet, three shows await you as well as a stand-up, before the musicians and DJs take the stage to get you moving from 7:20 p.m. to 11 p.m. With Arlette your circus, the atmosphere is peaceful. We take the time. There is enough to spend the whole day there, because you can drink and eat there.

Book comedy

Let’s go for the Comedy of the Book, 10 days in May. On the program, 80 guest editors and many more writers. If the traditional book fair is held on the weekend of May 17 to 19, with the majority of events concentrated there, the literary festival really begins this weekend with a sort of appetizer.
There is already the opening of the exhibition La maison d’Albertine this Friday at 6 p.m., Espace Dominique Bagouet. Albertine is a Swiss artist and illustrator working mainly for the world of youth. She offers a selection of original boards as well as notebooks and animated films on which she has collaborated. The artist will give a drawn reading alongside his accomplice Germano Zullo in the Auditorium of the Fabre Museum, on Saturday at 11 a.m. And she will offer a program of short films at 4 p.m. at the Nestor Burma cinema (from 6 years old). At 6 p.m. it will be Children of the Rain by Philippe Leclerc whose screenplay is by Montpellier Philippe Caza. To put an end to cinema, on Sunday, Ovidie presents at 6 p.m. at the Diagonal cinema I Shot Andy Warhol, documentary on Valérie Solanas, the one who attempted the artist’s life. A little before, at 4 p.m., Jean-Baptiste Del Amo will give a reading in the auditorium of La Panacée.
The comedy of the book is also parties. The premiere is given on Friday at 8 p.m. at the Maison des Choeurs by the violinist and writer Léonor de Récondo. The Tropism Festival

Tropisme holds its festival for three weeks. For this first weekend, there is already a lot to do. You can already browse the two exhibitions dedicated to the Gaumont Studios. One looks back on the history of French society, and the other takes on a musical dimension, with the artist Chassol who has fun with some films from the catalog. This Friday from 6 p.m., the third place is offering a new “Workshop Night”. The opportunity to browse the 34 workshops that Tropisme contains, to chat with the artists, to see live painting and performances or to follow DJ sets.
At the same time, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., with the Tropik’Halle, you immerse yourself in the world of Afro-Caribbean and Latin American cultures, whether musical or culinary. On the music side, Emma Lamadji Afroplugged will perform her afro-soul developed from the various influences of black music.
On Saturday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., reggae takes over the place with Montpellier’s Irie Jahzz and their dancehall reggae. They will be accompanied for this evening by two DJs (Adroner and Dj Kbira).
Sunday is dedicated to voguing, a cultural movement from the United States, born in the black LGBT community which parodied the beauty contests of the white elite. Sequins, sequins, excessive makeup and stiletto heels are out. From 6 p.m., “dancers, beginners or experienced” will compete in front of a jury. They will all be dressed in “Pink and White”. Around ten categories are offered to dancers. A festive and performative moment.

DJ Pone and DJ Djel

Two DJs for the price of one, that’s what’s on offer this Friday at Rockstore from midnight. First of all there is Dj Pone, an eminent member of Birdy Nam Nam who has also worked with NTM, Svinkels or Orelsan and Gringe. Several times French or European scratch champion, turntables and vinyls hold no secrets for him. For this evening mixing hip-hop and electro, the beatmaker will be associated with Dj Del also called “The Diamond Cutter”, member of the Fonky Family.
