The work of the German artist deported to the Auschwitz camp, who inspired David Foenkinos to Charlotte, Renaudot and Goncourt prize, is republished by Le Tripode editions.

The great work of the German artist Charlotte Salomon, who died during deportation to Auschwitz, hundreds of pages of what was not yet called “graphic novel”reappears in French on Thursday, at a reduced price.

Life? Or theater? is republished by Editions Le Tripode, with the German text translated in the margins of this volume of 3.5 kg and 820 pages. It is sold for 65 euros, compared to 95 euros for the first edition from the same publisher in 2015.

Charlotte Salomon, Jewish from Berlin, was 22 years old when she left the German capital for in January 1939. Her parents, for their part, returned to Amsterdam two months later. “Conceived in extreme solitude, Life? Or theater? was the fruit of months of restless work by a young woman who had fled Nazi Germany and wanted to respond to the chaos of the world with this work.writes the publisher in the presentation of the work.

His paintings form a rich autobiographical whole, which can be read coherently. She gave them to her French doctor during 1943. She was arrested in September of that year and deported to the Auschwitz camp, where she died, pregnant, in a gas chamber on October 10.

A work in red, green, blue

“We revised the entire photoengraving, changed the paper, for a spectacular difference. And at a lower price”explains to AFP the general director of Tripode, Frédéric Martin, who founded this publishing house in 2013.

The first edition had already sold some eight thousand copies. Charlotte Salomon then experienced a resurgence of notoriety after the novel Charlotte by David Foenkinos, Renaudot prize and Goncourt prize for high school students 2014.

“Not only is this the first historical case of a graphic novel. It is also an exceptional work, produced in unimaginable creative conditions. There were lots of reasons telling us to lower the price.according to Mr. Martin.

The colors of the young painter’s palette appear with even more brilliance. “Charlotte Salomon only worked with the three primary colors, while we print in four colors, including black. His work, we can say, is in RGB (red, green, blue), which makes for some striking pages.underlines the editor.
