It was necessary to resolve some questions left unanswered, and it was done, at least with regard to the figure of the mysterious character played by Daniel Weyman.

Gandalf or not?

The prequel series Lord of the Rings begins its plot several millennia before the events that will lead Frodo Baggins on the trail of the One Ring. Inspired by Silmarillion and notes left by writer JRR Tolkien at the end of his cult trilogy, the original Amazon Prime production is an opportunity to summon a number of new characters, but also some figures well known to fans, such as the Elf Galadriel. However, a character who appeared in the first episodes of the saga aroused the curiosity of fans. With his graying beard and his visible appetite for magic, the Stranger played by Daniel Weyman was first linked to the Lord of Evil, before it was discovered that the character was actually hiding under the guise of Halbrand.

It was towards another avenue that the fans finally turned. Throughout the first burst of episodes, certain clues instilled by the screenwriters pointed to the possible connection between the figure of the Stranger and that of a central character in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: Gandalf. Season 2, however, remained stingy with details, since despite more than substantial doubts and clues galore, the question is remained unresolved until the last episode. With the end of the initiatory journey coming to an end, it seemed logical that this new narrative arc would end with a revelation. It’s done.

In The Fellowship of the RingGandalf explains to Sauron: “I have received many names in many countries. Mithrandir among the Elves, Tharkûn for the Dwarves; Olórin I was in the West, in my forgotten youth, Incánus in the South, Gandalf in the North“. It was therefore expected that the name of the magician would differ from one era to another. It was ultimately under the name of Gandalf that the latter was officially identified in the final episode of season 2 of Rings of Power. The mystery ends, but raises the question of liberties taken by the series on the original work. In the books, Gandalf is not supposed to appear in Middle-earth until a thousand years later, after the fall of Sauron. We will therefore have to wait until season 3 to get the end of the story. Filming has not yet started, but we already know that five bursts of episodes are planned to bring the plot to its conclusion.
