From Zaragoza to Bordeaux, a collective and Franco-Spanish exhibition on the path of Goya

In partnership with the Cervantes Institute in , the collective of artists from the l’Irrégulière association is exhibiting until October 24 a series of drawings from travel diaries produced on the occasion of the bicentenary of the arrival of Francisco de Goya in Bordeaux. We owe this exhibition to the Spanish cultural structure De Vuelta con el Cuaderno, based in Zaragoza and which contacted the Bordeaux association to propose this joint project.

On one side and the other of the border, 25 cartoonists, professional or not, of all ages, clung to their travel notebooks to sketch, over 15 summer days, a series of drawings related to Zaragoza and Bordeaux, cities of birth and death of the painter Goya. Reflecting the personality and art of the famous Spaniard, each designer reproduced or imagined everything that could evoke the two facets of his life, joyful and dark. “In each city, artists had to capture in the blink of an eye everything they saw related to Goya. For some the painter was just a pretext, for others their drawing resonated with his universe,” underlines Céline Lalau, mediation manager at l’Irreglière.

Bicentenary

Each group had to lead the other group on the real or imaginary tracks. The Spanish took a bite of Bordeaux and the French took a bite out of Zaragoza. All in moments of fraternity and fruitful artistic exchanges.

Their collective work is currently on display at the Cervantes Institute, which immediately joined the project. “We ourselves were looking for an event to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the arrival of Francisco de Goya in Bordeaux, in 1824, the Irregular association really arrived at the right time” says Maria Jesus Garcia Gonzalez, director of the cultural center Spanish from Bordeaux.

Until October 24 at the Cervantes Institute, 57 Stewardship courses. Free entry. Contact: burdeos.cervantes.es
