A fortnight before the race for the Palme d’Or, the 77th Cannes Film Festival announced on Monday the composition of its jury, which includes Omar Sy, one of the faces of French cinema in the world.

The festival, which will be held from May 14 to 25, has chosen four men and four women who will officiate under the presidency of director Greta Gerwig, a figure in American auteur cinema who became a box office queen with “Barbie” last year. last.

At 40, she is the youngest president since Sofia Loren in 1966.

In his jury, is the French actor Omar Sy, 46 years old, who is taking a new step in an exceptional career since his first steps in schoolboy humor (“Le SAV des emissions”) until his start to his career at Hollywood, as an actor and producer. Through his popular successes in France (“Intouchables”).

Cannes has chosen one of the stars of a French cinema which aims to be more representative of the diversity of society: Omar Sy was born in the Paris suburbs, in Trappes, to parents who came from the border between Senegal and Mauritania.

The actor, who will debate with the other members of the jury to decide between the 22 films in competition, should cause a sensation on the red carpet: he is both one of the favorite personalities of the French and a popular performer around the world, notably since the success of the Netflix series “Lupin”.

Dress rehearsal before the Games

At his side will sit the French actress Eva Green, 43, known as much for her roles in France (most recently that of Milady in “The Three Musketeers”) as in Hollywood, with Tim Burton in particular, or alongside Daniel Craig in “Casino Royale”.

A year after walking the red carpet for “Killers of the Flower Moon” by Martin Scorsese, a role for which she was nominated for an Oscar, actress Lily Gladstone, from a Native American background, also joins the jury, including At 37 she is the youngest.

Added to this list are the Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino (“The Traitor”), 54 years old, the Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-Eda, 61 years old, Palme d’Or in 2018 for “A Family Affair”, the Spanish filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona (“The Circle of Snows”, released in France on Netflix), 48 years old, the Lebanese director Nadine Labaki, 50 years old, and the Turkish screenwriter and photographer Ebru Ceylan, 48 years old.

With its full jury, its 22 films in competition to succeed “Anatomy of a Fall” by Justine Triet, Palme d’Or in 2023, and more than a hundred films announced, including in the parallel selections, the great world cinema festival is now ready to open.

Two months before the Olympic Games, this major event will be a dress rehearsal in terms of security for the authorities.

In addition to the tens of thousands of festival-goers, this year again, very big names in cinema are expected there: the creator of Star Wars, Georges Lucas, for an honorary Palme d’Or, the godfather of Hollywood Francis Ford Coppola, in quest for a third Palme for “Megalopolis”, star actors like Demi Moore, Emma Stone, Selena Gomez, Adam Driver and Richard Gere.

The start will be given on the evening of May 14 with the opening ceremony, presented by Camille Cottin, and the screening of Quentin Dupieux’s latest comedy, with Léa Seydoux, Vincent Lindon and Louis Garrel, “The Second Act”, which released at the same time in theaters.
