Alessandro Michele is releasing a book.

While waiting to make his debut at Valentino next September, Alessandro Michele has not been idle: the Italian designer has set about co-writing a work that is both philosophical and autobiographical.

A philosophical essay around the creative process.

He hammers it home to the press, it is his first and last book. Alessandro Michele, artistic director of Gucci from 2015 to 2022, is trying his hand at a new field, that of literature. The latter is currently promoting The Life of Shapes: Philosophy of Re-enchantmentin French The life of forms: Philosophy of re-enchantment written with the Italian philosopher Emanuele Coccia and published by HarperCollins.

The work, which interweaves fashion and philosophy, is the result of long conversations between Coccia and Michele: “We talked and recorded our thoughts for about a year, mainly during the pandemic. The book is very intense and personal. I sorted out my thoughts, I discovered my priorities, it was like a therapy”explains the creator to WWD.

If he distills a few snippets of his life and his career, Alessandro Michele above all conceived this book as a philosophical essay around the concepts of freedom, fashion and, more generally, the creative process. A taste for philosophy that we already found in his press releases for Gucci: no more marketing formulas, the Roman designer preferring to describe his collections through quotes borrowed from great philosophers.

An editorial choice which therefore aims to go somewhat off the beaten track generally taken by the big names in fashion. Here, no sketches, no photos of fashion shows: Alessandro Michele listens to his philosophical desires without worrying about glamour.

An audacity and a freedom that work since during its presentation at the beginning of May at the international book fair in Turin, one of the most important book fairs in Europe, the work received excellent reviews and, the creator, came in no one defending him, a real ovation.
