Monsignor Guy de Kérimel, the Archbishop of , is concerned about the new show at the Machine called “Les Portes des Ténèbres”. The artistic director, François Delarozière, calms things down.

Apparently, the Machine’s next show, “Les Portes des Ténèbres”, is not going down well with the prelates of the local Catholic Church. So much so that Monsignor Guy de Kérimel, the Archbishop of Toulouse, has decided to organize a mass on October 16 in the Sacré-Cœur church to “consecrate Toulouse and its diocese”. “It seemed important to me to perform a spiritual act that protects our city of Toulouse and our diocese from these dark threats and despair” writes Monsignor Guy de Kérimel on the diocese’s Facebook page.

Indeed, on October 25, 26 and 27, the brand new creation of La Machine will welcome in the streets of the Pink City the Minotaur, the Spider but also Lilith, the Guardian of Darkness. Enough to upset the archbishopric. “I met three Catholic representatives who found that the poster was harsh and dark” confirms François Delarozière who felt obliged to “reassure” the religious authorities.

“The aim is not to attack beliefs, it is a pretext to do theatre” recalls the artistic director of La Machine, who admits to having been surprised by the approach. However, he tempers: “what pleases me is that they came to see me with the greatest respect, it was an open dialogue.” No anathema therefore, “I felt a community worried by the subject of the show: hell, mythology, the world of darkness and the Greek god Hades continues the director. So I admit that people have questions but it is just a story told to children”. The Minotaur being the protector of the city of Toulouse, “his opposite was needed” jokes François Delarozière. Asked several times, the archbishopric did not wish to react this Monday.
