For a win, it’s a win: this Disney+ series just swept the Emmy Awards. Enough to leave Netflix in the lurch.
Not one, not two, not three… Try 18 instead! That’s the number of awards won by the Shogun series at the last Emmy Awards ceremony. (which rewards the best shows on American television). A record for a season – especially for a program that was not filmed in English. Because yes, as its name suggests, Shogun takes place in Japan, and the majority of the cast therefore speaks Japanese. The plot takes place here in the 1600s when a bitter struggle for power takes place. Several members of the Council of Regents, ruling the country while waiting for the heir to the throne to come of age, are fighting for control of the country. In this context, the arrival of an English and Protestant pilot (while Catholics are settled in Japan) is not going to make things easier.

A series to dominate them all
A gripping story, often compared to Game of Thrones, which has largely won over the press and the public. On the reference site Rotten Tomatoes, the first season of Shogun has a near-perfect score of 99%. Critics praise the “sumptuous” visuals as well as an unparalleled respect for Japan in the 1600s. In France, the series is broadcast on Disney+.
A unanimous success that is now felt at the Emmy Awards. Of its twenty awards, Shogun leaves with four particularly prestigious awards : best drama series – the holy grail for a series of this genre -, best actress in a drama series (for Anna Sawai), best actor in a drama series (Hiroyuki Sanada) and best direction… The show, broadcast in the USA on the FX channel and via the Hulu streaming platform, had been nominated in 25 categories.

A hegemony that left little room for competition: in terms of drama, Shogun passed big clients like Amazon’s Fallout or Netflix’s The Crown! The streaming platform with the red “N” still shone on the mini-series side, with My Little Reindeer – a story of harassment between a bartender and his customer in 7 episodes… But nothing can be done, the Disney show remains the undisputed star of these Emmy Awards. A second season is also currently in preparation.
