Named best drama series of the year 2024 at the Emmy Awards, this program is available to stream and you would be wrong to deprive yourself of it.
Every year, the Emmy Awards crown the most notable series of the past months. The awards ceremony announced its winners on the night of September 15-16, 2024. And a new series has broken the records and has largely established itself against the competition, with no less than 18 awards in the drama categories, making it the series that you absolutely should not miss in 2024. And good news, it is possible to watch it in streaming in France.
This historical fiction is an adaptation of a best-selling novel by the British-born Australian writer, screenwriter, director and producer James Clavell. The plot takes place in Japan in the 17th century, as a civil war approaches. An English commander could have a decisive impact on the country’s political life, while a Japanese lord is engaged in a fight to the death against his enemies on the Council of Regents, and intends to use the newcomer to tip the scales in his favor. In the middle, there is a translator, a Christian noblewoman whose lineage has fallen into disgrace, who therefore has decisive power. This series is Shogun.
When it was released last February, Shogun was quickly compared to Game of Thrones by American critics for its complex political intrigues and sometimes brutal scenes. Described as a historical and ambitious fresco that has achieved a rare consensus, this series in only ten episodes (each lasting an average of one hour) has also been unanimously acclaimed in France for its narrative and visual ambition.
Shogun was therefore the big winner of the Emmy Awards with its 18 awards. Crowned Best Drama Series and Best Director, it also offered an acting award to actors Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai. This series thus entered the history of the American awards ceremony as the most awarded series for a single season.
Shogun is also the first non-English-speaking series to be awarded Best Drama Series (Hacks was crowned for comedies, and My little reindeer for mini-series). If you missed the phenomenon, don’t panic: the 10 episodes of Shogun are currently available on the Disney+ streaming platform.
