Only spectators with an eagle eye who have scrutinized Matt Reeves’ feature film have been able to notice this little detail, hidden in the last seconds which precede the final credits.

Whether you’re watching Raiders of the Lost Ark by Steven Spielberg, The Hunchback of Notre Dame from Disney Studios, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by Chris Columbus or any of the three parts of The Lord of the Rings, at provided of course that you have a keen sense of observation, you should be able to distinguish several small details slipped into the image by the filmmakers, for the attention of the spectators who would have fun looking for them.

Indeed, many pop culture feature films are full of what we call easter eggs, that is to say references or winks more or less well concealed, and intended to be spotted by the most attentive fans.

Let’s take a look at Cloverfield, a memorable science fiction and horror feature film directed by Matt Reeves in 2008, in which a gigantic monster attacks New York City without warning.

In the last seconds of the film…

Filmed using the protagonist’s camcorder found footage, the action cuts off at the end of the film while the characters find themselves in a critical situation. Before the final credits of the feature film begin, a final sequence, recorded about a month before the disaster, is then broadcast on the screen.

It is at this moment in the film, at 1 hour, 13 minutes and 21 seconds precisely, that you will need to press the “pause” button on your remote control and carefully observe the sky, squinting your eyes closely. While the two protagonists film Manhattan Bay from the top of a Ferris wheel, look carefully at the top right of your screen.

…the monster falls into the water!

You will see that a tiny black dot crosses the clouds and crashes directly into the sea. But what does this unidentified flying object represent? According to Internet theorists, it is quite simply the monster, which landed on Earth a few weeks earlier by falling directly from the sky, and which then developed in the ocean before attacking.

In other words, this little detail tends to lend extraterrestrial origins to Cloverfield’s gigantic creature.
