A two-time Oscar winner, he also wrote, among other hits, the song “Up where we belong” performed by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes for the film An Officer and a Gentleman. But also “Tears in Heaven”, immortalized by Eric Clapton. Will Jennings was 80 years old.

Since its release in 1997, the interplanetary hit “My heart will go on” has been inseparable from its singer, Céline Dion. But in the shadow of the singer, the two artisans of this success have contributed to making the film’s flagship song a cult classic Titanic (directed by James Cameron): composer James Horner and lyricist Will Jennings, both Oscar winners for the occasion. Jennings, we learned on BFMTV, died on September 7 at the age of 80.

Songs for Whitney Houston or Diana Ross

With TitanicWill Jennings was not at his first prestigious award. He had, in fact, won the same statuette a few years before, in 1983. He had then shared it with the composer Jack Nitzche, for the song of the film Officer and Gentleman“Up where we belong” (performed by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes). He also won three Grammy Awards and three Golden Globes, notably for the superb “Tears in Heaven” which appears in the film Rush and which Eric Clapton, in 1991, dedicated to his deceased little boy.

Will Jennings had also written songs for Whitney Houston, Dionne Warwick, Roy Orbison, Mariah Carey, Diana Ross and BB King.
