well-being – YouTube will no longer offer videos that could affect the well-being of adolescents

Good news for body positivity advocates: YouTube decided last week to restrict recommendations for certain weight and body-related videos for teens ages 13 to 17. A measure that should apply everywhere in the world.

As the BBC points out, the platform’s algorithm typically suggests similar content to users after watching a specific video, also displaying related videos in a sidebar. However, this feature will no longer be available to teens when they watch certain types of videos, including those that compare physical characteristics and idealize certain body types over others, idealize particular fitness levels or body weights, and show social aggression in the form of bullying.

Limited scope

YouTube said the decision was based on findings from its Youth and Families Advisory Board, which observed that “teens are more likely than adults to develop negative self-images because of repeated messages about ideal norms in the content they consume online.”
