Some well-known and recognized political figures find themselves unemployed today. How do they live afterwards?
Former Brussels minister and former mayor of Ixelles Christos Doulkeridis registered as unemployed and updated his Linkedin profile. In Forest, former mayor Mariam El Hamidine has resumed Dutch lessons while also waiting to find a job while even the Prime Minister, Alexander De Croo admitted this Wednesday morning that he did not know what his future would hold.
Mayors and aldermen who no longer have a job Bruxelles receive compensation. This is a recent decision: municipalities must compensate outgoing representatives on the basis of the “Reform of local governance” ordinance which applied to elected officials not renewed last year.
The number of months of exit compensation depends on the number of consecutive years during which the mandate was exercised, up to one month of salary compensation per year of seniority. This compensation is only granted if the outgoing representative does not receive any other professional income greater than the exit compensation.
In Wallonianothing is planned in these cases. Mayors and aldermen who are not re-elected are not entitled to anything. No compensation, therefore, and no unemployment either. Those who were civil servants and who took leave during their mandate return to their basic profession. In the private sector, the initial work in most cases is lost.
