According to Le Soleil, the Saint-Louis breach has caused between 500 and 650 deaths over the past 22 years, including 11 recorded this week alone.
Tidiane Diédhiou, head of the applied forecasting department at the National Civil Aviation and Meteorology Agency (Anacim), announced that reflection is underway to find a solution to this dramatic situation.

“At Anacim, we are working on a bulletin which will allow forecasts to be made one week in advance. This could allow fishermen to better plan their activities and, perhaps, reduce risks,” he said.

“The program, which could start as early as next month, aims to mitigate the impacts linked to climate change,” he said. Currently, Anacim uses an early warning system based on SMS, voice calls and emails. These messages are sent to authorities and technical services, particularly in the fishing sector.

Mr. Diédhiou also explained that “this system was designed in collaboration with fishermen, with awareness sessions organized to allow them to better understand climate information and its issues. »

However, he deplored that certain alert messages are sometimes received while fishermen are already at sea, which limits their effectiveness.
