“It’s not a virus, I’m about to give birth.” Valentina Mecchi, a 42-year-old Italian woman, thought she had the flu until she had to give birth to a baby at home.

3,350 kg and 51 cm of happy surprise. The little girl named Michela was born on Wednesday January 15 in incredible circumstances, as her birth was not planned on the agenda of the Italian couple formed by Valentina Mecchi and Giacomo Paoli. The crazy story is told by these new parents to Corriere Fiorentino.

The 43-year-old man from Altopascio in Tuscany left his home very early in the morning on Wednesday January 15 to buy medicine for his wife against vomiting and diarrhea. Valentina suspected she had all the symptoms of the flu. But once he returns home, Giacomo learns from his wife that she is about to give birth.

“A few months ago my partner started having a swelling in her stomach.”

Valentina Mecchi thus denied pregnancy. However, a few months earlier, a warning sign could have predicted this future event. “My partner started to have a swelling in her stomach. After consulting the doctor, a possible gluten intolerance was hypothesized, given that the symptom appeared especially after Valentina ate products such as bread and pasta“, says Giacomo. In the weeks that followed, no sign alerted the couple, “nor even the absence of menstruation given that Valentina has always had an often irregular cycle“.

But on the night of January 14 to 15, Valentina became nauseated. “We lie awake and try to figure out what it could be but hours pass and the situation doesn’t change“, says her husband. She ended up giving birth at home, without incident. “This little body came out on its own, with the umbilical cord attached, without making any noise, so much so that I was for a moment afraid that it was a dead fetus.“, he continues, before hearing the little girl cry and understanding that “everything was fine“. The baby and mother were taken to the hospital, where Giacomo and Valentina had to quickly find a name for their first child. Welcome Michela.
