Paxlovid, an antiviral already used against Covid-19, could also offer solutions to patients suffering from long Covid, according to the work of American researchers.
Worldwide, an estimated 76 million people are still living with persistent symptoms of long Covid. In France, ” up to 300 000 patients are still annoyed every day », announces François-Xavier Lescure, researcher at the Inserm Infection, antimicrobials, modeling, evolution center. Until now, only cognitive and behavioral therapies (CBT) and adapted physical activity have shown (relative) effectiveness. This could change: researchers from the University of California, San Francisco, reveal the potential effectiveness of an oral antiviral already widely used against Covid-19, but until now never tested specifically for long Covid: Paxlovid. The latter is made up of two active ingredients, nirmatrelvir and ritonavir, and acts by inhibiting the replication of the virus, allowing the immune system to better control the infection.
