While school platforms allow parents to continuously monitor their children’s assessments, grades become an additional source of stress for students. For the founder of Our Common Future, Hélène Roques, it is urgent to put their importance into perspective. Initiatives exist.

This week, our children are heading back to school. What if, at this time of going back to school, when we wish each other the best for the year to come, we imagined a small revolution capable of offering them a little more serenity? Because although we wish them the best, the indicators of adolescent unhappiness remain worrying. A reality which affects all social classes, and which public power has seized. What have we not yet understood?

The decline in adolescent mental health has many causes. But one factor remains little explored: their relationship to time and the race for results. They were born with a smartphone in their cradle, experienced confinement at a pivotal age, two isolating upheavals, which profoundly changed their relationship with each other. They live in a world of immediacy, saturated with bad news – war, climate, debt – which crushes them as if the weight of the world rested on their shoulders. Added to this is academic pressure, amplified by algorithms and platforms like Pronote, which transform each grade into instant and omnipresent information. Especially since parents have access to it. “The world is falling apart, and adults are looking at our grades!” a teenager told me
