“Many people assume that as long as they drink at or below the current recommendations of one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men, there is no risk to their health or well-being. The data does not support this regarding cancer risk. »
Vivek Murthy, chief public health officer in the United States, said this in an interview with New York Times on his call for labels on alcohol bottles to be updated to incorporate a cancer warning. Labels currently on bottles and cans of alcoholic beverages warn against drinking alcohol during pregnancy or before driving or operating other machines, as well as general “health risks” .
Such a change would require new legislation to be passed by Congress. The alcoholic beverage industry is sure to strongly oppose this.
Alcohol directly contributes to 100,000 cases of cancer and 20,000 cancer-related deaths each year, according to Dr. Murthy. He wants labels updated to reflect the increased risk of breast cancer, colon cancer and at least five other malignancies now linked to alcohol consumption through scientific studies.
