Health: The flu is spreading at high speed in Luxembourg

As in neighboring countries, the flu has gradually taken hold in Luxembourg. According to figures communicated by the Ministry of Health, on Friday, the number of reported cases almost doubled in one week, going from 375 to 745. A continuous increase for five weeks. For the record, 60 cases were declared the week of November 18. There are twelve times more today.

“It’s a real resurgence, particularly of influenza A. The epidemic is arriving a little earlier than usual,” notes Dr. Guillaume Steichen, general practitioner in Esch-sur-Alzette, contacted by The essentials. The figures from the authorities confirm the doctor’s feelings with 82% of influenza A among the samples analyzed in the laboratories. The return of the flu epidemic, systematic during the winter season, once again raises the question of protecting the most vulnerable. “It is a disease that can be fatal for the most vulnerable,” recalls Dr. Steichen, inviting those affected to be vaccinated.

“Vaccination remains the most reliable way to prevent seasonal flu and reduce the risk of associated complications,” supports the Ministry of Health, which also lists the essential barrier gestures to be respected to avoid transmitting the disease (washing of hands, throw away used tissues, avoid physical contact, ventilate regularly, avoid crowds and stay at home in case of symptoms).

If the flu is not to be taken lightly for the most vulnerable, it is no less painful for others. “It’s clear that it’s not a cakewalk,” admits Dr. Steichen, explaining that the infection can last up to seven days. And since it is a virus, we must remember that antibiotics are useless. “Apart from symptomatic treatment (washing the nose with sea water, paracetamol), there is not much to do except wait,” he says.

The best treatment therefore lies in anticipation by remaining vigilant in order to avoid contamination. Not always easy during the holiday season. “Especially since the flu affects everyone, all age categories,” concludes the doctor.
