The Department of Health has published the latest figures for respiratory infections. Flu cases have been steadily increasing for several weeks.
The Grand Duchy is facing a seasonal flu epidemic. This is what emerges from the latest figures from the Health Department which notes that the number of cases increased from 375 to 745 compared to last week, an increase of 99%. “This progression is part of a constant growth trend observed since week 47, when there were 60 cases, followed by 114 cases in week 48, 190 cases in week 49 and 375 cases in week 50,” specifies the Management of Health. During the last five weeks, there has been 82% influenza A and 18% influenza B.
While Luxembourg has entered the wave of seasonal flu, the Health Directorate reminds that vaccination remains the best protection and that it is still possible to be vaccinated to limit the spread of the virus. It also reduces the potential risks of complications associated with the disease.
But barrier gestures are also essential. During this season, it is important to wash your hands regularly with soap and water for 30 seconds, scrubbing the palms, fingers, backs of the hands and under the nails thoroughly. It is also better to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and immediately throw used tissues in the trash. Physical contact such as hugs, kisses and handshakes should also be limited to avoid any spread and it is safer to avoid crowds and gatherings.
Finally, in the event of infection, you must stay at home to avoid contaminating those around you. “Ventilate the rooms regularly, at least 3 to 4 times a day for 10 minutes,” advises the Health Department
Covid under control
As for covid, the figures are much less alarming. During the week of December 16 to 22, the number of positive SARS-CoV-2 cases increased slightly from 98 to 109 cases, an increase of 11% compared to the previous week.
