This Thursday, December 19, 2024, parents gather at 4:30 p.m. in front of the doors of Jean-Baptiste-Massillon school in (Seine-Maritime). As usual. Except that today, the children returned to the establishment after learning of the death of a 7-year-old child, as a result ofdevastating meningitis.

“It hurts the parents,” says 76actu a mother of a student, “it’s a rare case so obviously we were a little worried when we learned about it.” Her neighbor shares this feeling, especially since her son was in the same class as the deceased girl.

We often saw her leaving school as well as the parents. We didn’t necessarily talk to them but we saw them.

Parents of students were informed of the sad news via the ClassDojo application. Others, whose children are cas contactsdirectly received an email from the ARS (Regional Health Agency) to recommend that their children take antibiotics [Une antibioprophylaxie autrement dit, une prise d’antibiotique pour des personnes non malades en prévention, a déjà été recommandée à 15 élèves, 2 enseignants et 49 personnes du cercle proche a indiqué l’ARS].

What is meningitis?

This is an inflammation of the meninges, the membranes that protect the brain and spinal cord. This is an infection by a virus (for example measles, mumps, herpes or influenza) or by bacteria. It is this last infection which is the most dangerous. It can quickly get worse and lead to the death of the person.

This is the case of a young mother whose child is a contact case. “He’s doing well,” she announces, and “we’re not worried.” An opinion shared by another mother who “trusts the medical profession” and adds “everything was under control, the management of the establishment did what was necessary”.

And after?

This tragedy occurs while the Massillon school welcomes Cassard students, numbering 140, evacuated because of cracks observed in the canteen. A psychological unit has been set up for children, teachers and families who wish it.
