14 cases of HIV contamination were recorded between April and November 2024, particularly in the Savoie department. A cluster which has led the Regional Health Agency to strengthen its prevention and screening actions.
Between April and November 2024, the infectious disease services of hospital centers in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region – particularly in the Savoie department – identified 14 cases of HIV contamination with the same viral strain. Investigations carried out by the ARS made it possible to confirm that certain cases were linked.
Faced with the acceleration of contaminations in recent months, the ARS Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, in conjunction with local associations, has decided to strengthen prevention and screening actions, with particular attention paid to people with multiple partners
“Today transmission via sexuality is the main vector of infection in HIV . Transmission by drug injection is negligible.confides a Savoyard virologist who preferred to remain anonymous. The latter emphasizes the need to protect oneself during sexual intercourse: “Unfortunately, condoms are no longer in fashion . In the current cluster, if people had worn condoms, the spread would never have happened. In the 90s, there was advertising or distributions, even in schools. These are things that exist less and less. It’s a shame because protecting yourself means avoiding HIV.”.

“The condom is the basis of prevention”
Better managed and less and less fatal, HIV has “commonplace for several years”assures the biologist. “This case shows that you must always protect yourself. The condom is the basis of prevention. It is also important to use screening after a risky situation”he concludes.
Last summer, the High Authority for Health (HAS) also gave the green light to the reimbursement of injectable Prep, an antiviral that can be used “before taking a risk”. Again a prevention tool, for audiences who love chemsex or “festive evenings” which are increasing in France.
