The duck has gone through various crises linked to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza which caused production to drop and its markets to disappear. Vaccination for the 2023-2024 season has allowed a return to production, but questions remain unanswered.

Production costs which have increased due to a complicated geopolitical context and the increase in the cost of raw materials, a distribution market which has collapsed, large stocks and new rules concerning vaccination against Influenza Highly Pathogenic Avian, so many points which leave the duck industry in the uncertainty of a peaceful future. “ You should know that we are the only ones to vaccinate, we duck breeders. On the other hand, all French poultry farming is protected by this act of vaccination. However, we are the only ones to pay the rest at the expense of the sector which ensures the safety of all », regrets Bernard de la Morinière duck breeder within the Earl of Clairville in Saint-Brieuc-des-Iffs in Ille-et-Vilaine.

As a reminder, according to figures provided by the DGAL (Directorate General for Food) for the first vaccination season, in six months, 29 million ducks were vaccinated and 6.5 million euros supported by the sector for a total of more than 42.5 million euros. The latter calculated that this represents 22 euro cents per duck for an average weight of 4 kilos, or a cost of 60 euros per tonne of live weight borne by the sector.
