Marisa Christie has no memory of the birth of her three daughters. The Texan, aged around thirty, remained unconscious for several days after giving birth to them on August 21. The young mother whose delivery by cesarean section was planned suffered a very rare complication. An episode following which she lost her memory. “My family took a lot of photos and videos of me when I was in the hospital, which helped me a lot to face reality,” she explains to the American media KBTX3 which relays her story .
The thirty-year-old was the victim of an extremely rare postnatal complication, an amniotic fluid embolism, Dr Amber Samuel told the media. This “occurs when amniotic fluid that contains cells or tissue from the fetus enters the pregnant woman’s bloodstream and causes a serious reaction,” explains the MSD manual. The result is possible lung and heart damage, as well as excessive bleeding.
This life-threatening emergency requires rapid care. Eventually, after trying several treatments, doctors were forced to remove Christie’s uterus. “I don’t think I would have survived if I hadn’t been in this hospital,” said the young mother who regained consciousness a week after the operation.
“I remember thinking I don’t know these babies. It’s very strange. It feels like they’re not real, like they’re not mine, she told Today. They were already over a week old when I met them. (…) It took me a little time to establish a connection with them. »
His wife’s delivery and the complications that followed were also a “roller coaster of emotions” for Dylan. “It was the most difficult moment of my life, going from the most beautiful experience of seeing our little girls for the first time (…) to cardiac massage,” remembers the young father. Now, Marisa Christie is on the road to recovery and the little girls named Charlotte, Kendall and Collins are “in perfect health”.
