Ivory Coast: Press release from the Ministry of Health relating to the resurgence of Covid 19 cases in certain countries in the sub-region and false information

For several days now, we have noticed the circulation on social networks of an article followed by a message attributed to the WHO and the Ministry of Health, of Public Hygiene and Universal Health Coveragereporting an epidemic of “a coVID-Omicron XBB, five times more dangerous than the delta variant, with a higher mortality rate”.

The Ministry of Health, of Public Hygiene and Universal Health Coverage wishes to bring to the attention of national opinion that these various elements in circulation do not emanate from the WHO or its services.

These malicious messages likely to create doubt and fear among the population are indeed fake news.

Since the observation of the resurgence of cases of Covid 19 in certain countries in the sub-region, upon return from the 2024 Hajj, measures have been taken to prevent any risk of spread of Covid-19 in our country.

To this end, an information and health control system has been set up at Félix Houphouët Boigny airport since June 24, 2024, to test travelers returning from the Hajj and from certain high-risk countries.

This system has made it possible to record to date, June 28, 2024, 25 cases of Covid-19 out of 619 travelers sampled (PCR) or 4% of positive cases, 0 deaths. This rate is below the disease control threshold. Positive cases are isolated and monitored, with strict observance of barrier measures in accordance with the national strategy to combat Covid-19.

The Ministry of Health, Public Hygiene and Universal Health Coverage recommends the following measures to ensure the protection of populations:

Systematic screening for Covid-19 in people presenting any of the following signs: fever, cough and difficulty breathing;

Compliance with barrier measures by affected people and those around them, in particular wearing a mask and washing hands with soap and water;

In the event of a positive Covid test, consultation and treatment are free in the nearest health center;

Vulnerable people are invited to get vaccinated and observe barrier measures;

Vaccines are available and administered free of charge in our health facilities.

The Ministry invites the population to be vigilant, calm and above all not to panic.
