On the social network TikTok, French cardiologist Louis Bendayan advises his subscribers against making their beds in the morning. According to him, this harmless gesture taught to all children would in fact have unrecognized harmful consequences.

“The lazy people will be happy! Don’t make your bed in the morning”, declares the doctor on his account @drtik_tok, followed by more than 1.3 million people. Leave it in this state, he continues. Your health will thank you because even if you don’t have a partner, know that you don’t sleep alone! Indeed, there are millions of mites sleeping with you.”

According to Dr. Bendayan, making your bed encourages the reproduction of mites in the fabric. “If you close the sheet, you keep the heat and humidity in” stored during the night, explains the heart care specialist. “You have to ventilate and above all, don’t make the bed in the morning,” he repeats, emphasizing that mites are far from harmless. “They can cause dermatological problems, allergies and even asthma.”

To prevent the proliferation of these microscopic arachnids, Louis Bendayan reminds Internet users that it is imperative to change your sheets regularly. “Change the sheets at least once a week, wash them at high temperature and air your bed!”, he advises.

These feed on dead cells lost during the night, as doctor Stéphane Gayet explains to our colleagues at Atlantico. “The dead skin that comes off each individual every day (1 mg) makes it possible to feed several thousand mites for months: this fact allows us to understand their phenomenal proliferation. Thus, when conditions are optimal, there can be several millions of people in a mattress.”

For all these reasons, it is actually recommended to wash your sheets once a week, especially if you shower in the morning. The recommended temperature is at least 60% to eliminate bacteria.
