Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia. It is the seventh leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability and dependency among older people worldwide. In France, this degenerative disease affects more than 1,175,000 people, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. The first signs appear in correlation with several risk factors. A new study, published in The Lancet Public Health and led by researchers at University College London, explored how the prevalence of dementia risk factors has changed over time. This development could have consequences for future dementia rates. Indeed, eliminating potentially modifiable risk factors could prevent around 40% of cases, according to scientists.

An increase in obesity and diabetes

For this study, the team analyzed 27 articles involving people with dementia across the world with data collected between 1947 and 2015, as well as the latest article, published in 2020. They extracted data from each article on the risk factors and calculated the proportion of dementia.
