Abus Hyp-E: adjustable visor, indicators, brake light… the ultimate bike helmet is here!

Present at the Pro Days 2024 show in Toulouse, the German equipment manufacturer Abus presented several new products in terms of bicycle helmets. The star of the stand was clearly the Hyp-E, an urban model which has everything you would expect from a high-end model: indicators, front light, rear light, visor and so on.

The casque Abus Hyp-E will be the new high-end helmet from Abus for cyclists operating mainly in urban areas. It’s a bit of an all-inclusive helmet, even if it is fully modular. With a style that takes up certain curves seen in the automotive world – the rear lighting signature seems to be borrowed from Audi – it undeniably displays a certain charm, with three colors available: dark gray (the one in our photos), light gray and champagne.

But that is ultimately not the primary interest of this headset. No, the first differentiating point is to look for the lighting system put in place. Equipped with LED strips flanked at the front and back of the helmet, the Abus Hyp-E allows you to be better seen on your bike. Better yet, turn signals are present, which can be activated via a remote Bluetooth control. The system is well designed with scrolling indicators positioned at the front and rear and whose small audible feedback – like in a car – allows us to remember that our head is flashing. The order that we were able to handle was provisional, the final model will be slightly different, but will still offer light feedback.

The rear strip also serves as a brake light. No gyroscope or accelerometer to activate the increase in brightness during deceleration and braking phases, via a remote module, Bluetooth once again, which you slide onto the brake lever. The system is thus very responsive and a button also allows you to make a “headlight flash” with the LED strip.

Added to this play of light is a particularly well-designed visor. Intended to be modular, it can be easily removed – a clip system is present. It can also be adjusted in depth, which is particularly practical for glasses wearers. If the exhibition helmet was entitled to a translucent visor, smoked and photochromic versions are also planned.

A winter kit, which takes the form of clip-on earmuffs, is available. The helmet itself has superior ventilation that can be closed as desired, allowing you to be dry on rainy days. Finally, an insect net is also present.

However, you will have to be patient to acquire it, the Abus Hyp-E helmet should only arrive on the market in June 2025! The price will start at €199 in its bare version (only the lights), increases to €270 with the winter kit and reaches €300 in its fully equipped version. It will also be possible to purchase all the accessories separately.
