innovation – A 13-year-old British man became the first patient in the world to receive a brain implant to control his epileptic seizures

This is a world first. In the United Kingdom, a 13-year-old teenager with severe epilepsy has been testing a new brain implant for eight months now that could be revolutionary. As reported by the BBC, this neurostimulator has already reduced his epileptic seizures by 80%.

Suffering from Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a form of epilepsy resistant to treatment, since he was 3 years old, the young Briton suffered between twenty and a hundred seizures per day before his operation. He often fell to the ground, lost consciousness and sometimes even stopped breathing. Since his operation, which lasted eight hours, his mother says he is happier and has “a much better quality of life”.

“The future now looks brighter”

During this procedure, a deep brain neurostimulator was installed in his skull and two electrodes were implanted deep into his brain. This entire medical device blocks or disrupts the abnormal peaks of electrical activity responsible for epileptic seizures by constantly emitting current. The device is charged using wireless headphones.
