It is a scourge that now rots the daily lives of residents of the Toulouse metropolitan area every summer.

The arrival of the tiger mosquito a few years ago, then its proliferation, transformed our summer evenings into an XXL fight.

Tiger Mosquito: the scourge of Occitania

Haute-Garonne is the department most infested in Occitanie by the pest: “Haute-Garonne is very colonized” by the tiger mosquito, “with a significant concentration” of the species in the department, detailed at Toulouse Newsa few weeks ago, Amandine Cochet, epidemiologist at Santé Publique France.

In total, some 234 mosquito control treatments were carried out in Occitanie, including 93 in Haute-Garonne alone, by far the territory most affected.

Between June and October 2024, Saint-Orens-de-Gameville will activate a treatment each month to limit the invasion. She announced this to her residents on June 15, when the first treatment was starting:

“We are pleased to inform you that the Nociva company will operate once a month in our town, from June to October. This involves biologically treating the watercourses and ditches of the municipality to eliminate mosquito larvae. It is a biological anti-larval treatment based on bacillus thuringiensis which will be used on identified stagnant water. We will also maintain the nesting traps for optimal efficiency. In addition to these interventions, we installed bat nest boxes, our natural allies in the fight against mosquitoes,” she explains.
