Since October 31, the risk of highly pathogenic avian influenza has been elevated from “moderate” to “high” in metropolitan France.
This decision, taken due to the high circulation of the virus in wildlife, involves the strict application of protective measures for captive poultry and birds.
Mandatory measures for poultry keepers
If you own poultry or captive birds for non-commercial purposes, you must immediately:
- Confine your poultry or install protective nets on your backyard;
- Monitor your animals daily to detect any unusual signs.
Reminder of the precautions to usually follow
- Protect food stocks and water from wild birds;
- Avoid any contact between your poultry and wild birds or poultry from another farm;
- Do not go to another breeding farm without special precautions;
- Store new litter in a place protected from humidity and contamination without possible contact with corpses. If the droppings and manure are composted near the barnyard, they must not be transported outside the farm before a storage period of 2 months. Beyond this period, spreading is possible;
- Carry out regular cleaning of buildings and equipment used for your farmyard and never use surface water: pond water, stream water, rain water collected for cleaning your farm.
In case of abnormal mortality
Store the corpses in a refrigerator, insulating and protecting them, and contact your veterinarian or the Departmental Directorate in charge of population protection. (DDPP).
