Diabetes in Corsica: worrying figures

On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, this Thursday, November 14, the Corsica Regional Health Agency revealed the figures for Corsica. And they have cause for concern: more than 20,000 people are affected by this pathology today on the island. With, in particular, more and more young people.

This November 14 is World Diabetes Day.

On this occasion, the Regional Health Agency (ARS) of Corsica provided us with the key figures concerning Corsica, taken from the national health data system (SNDS). And they are clear: the pathology is constantly progressing on the island.

As a reminder, diabetes is a chronic disease, which is characterized by a disorder in the assimilation, use and storage of sugars provided by food. This results in high blood glucose levels.

Diabetes is considered by health authorities to be “an important public health problem”because of “the increase in its prevalence due to the aging of the population and the increase in obesity and sedentary behavior, its consequences on daily life”details the Corsican ARS.

This is the patients name suffering from diabetes in Corsica.

90% of them have type 2 diabetes.

There are in fact two main types of diabetes, due to different dysfunctions: type 1due to a lack of secretion insulin by the pancreas and type 2, due to improper use of insulin by the body’s cells.

The first occurs most often in children, adolescents and young adults. It is much less common than type 2 diabetes, which is declared in generally after the age of 20, although it can sometimes appear as early as adolescence, especially in the presence of overweight.

This is the prevalence rate diabetes in Corsica.

Prevalence is the number of cases of disease recorded for a specific population. This includes both new and old cases.

In short, this means that 6.56% of the island population is affected by diabetes. A number greater than national prevalence, which is 6.13%.

This is the number of patients with long-term illness (ALD) for diabetes in 2022 in Corsica.

According to the definition of Health Insurance, ALD concerned a pathology “whose severity and/or chronic nature requires prolonged treatment”.

Diabetes is the most common ALD in Corsica, with 18% of ALDs.

In the absence of an initiating center for the management of diabetes in Corsica, some island patients must go to the continent up to 6 times a year.

This is the observation drawn up by the Corsica home health agency which, through the Corsica Santé structure, acts throughout the territory to support patients suffering from pathologies requiring long-term support and monitoring.

This support is all the more important since the territory only has 10 specialist doctors for 10,000 patients.

“Several hundred children live with type 1 diabetes and the absence of pediatric endocrinologists on the island affects their medical monitoring”adds Corsica Santé.

In light of these figures, the finding is worrying. “Diabetes is constantly increasing in our territory, particularly among men, young people under 20 and people over 80”analyzes the ARS.

Faced with this resurgence, health authorities are calling for screening: It is often during an examination prescribed by the cardiologist that we will discover that we have type 2 diabetes. This is why we also emphasize the need to have a blood test every year. Measuring blood sugar is a good indicator.”

A diabetics fair will be held on November 23 in Porticcio. Organized by the association Les Diabétiques de Corse – AFD20 with the support of the ARS, this information and prevention day is open to professionals and the general public. Objective : “Allow the first to be supported in the care of their patients and for everyone to better understand this disease”.
