she “died twice”, “not knowing what happened is the worst”

“I’m still confused and in shock,” Keeley said when telling her story to The Sun. In the middle of childbirth, the young woman suffered not one, but two cardiac arrests, which she survived but which left a deep mark on her.

Keeley remembers the surgeon making the incision and then the anesthesiologist performing chest compressions before her heart stopped again. She woke up a second time to hear her daughter Sophia’s cries, but had suffered rib fractures from the compressions.

After an uncomplicated pregnancy, Keeley opted for an elective C-section due to a previous emergency C-section. During the operation, she felt a strong urge to vomit before seeing the ECG line flatten and hearing the famous prolonged beep. After waking up, she learned that she had fractured ribs from chest compressions. She returned home the next day, but suffered for months. “I couldn’t move, I had to sleep on a support for about two months because of the pain in my chest,” she says.

Despite this, Keeley managed to develop a strong bond with her daughter Sophia. Doctors could never explain the cardiac arrests, making it difficult for Keeley to move on. “Not knowing what happened complicates everything. I would like to understand, and if anyone has had a similar experience, I would like to hear about it,” she concludes.

“In the commune, they had never seen this”: the birth of Laura, a 32-year-old Belgian, surprised everyone, even the doctors, “I have never experienced this before”
