The Toulouse resident Youssef El Akermi took on the challenge of joining Roscoff in Hendaye by taking the Vélodyssée in order to raise awareness among the population about cancer screening and to raise funds for the benefit of the National League Against Cancer. Throughout his journey, he is accompanied by two friends.
1,300 km in 38 stages
The start is given this Monday, October 21, 2024 at 8 a.m. from the zero point of the Vélodyssée near the Roscoff lighthouse. The journey will last 13 days (arrival on November 2) to cover the 1,300 km in 38 stages. The challenge arose when Youssef El Akermi learned last year that his brother Samir was suffering from cancer. “Faced with my powerlessness to help him, I wanted to raise awareness among the population about cancer screening so that treatments could be put in place as quickly as possible,” he explains. Two friends offer to accompany this 51-year-old sportsman, rugby player and president of a mountain bike and trekking club: Olivier Gounot who will cycle alongside him and Lionel Castex who will provide the rear base with a camper van which will serve as accommodation . Youssef’s wife, Aurore Oges, a native of Morlaix, will be at the start and finish and their daughters Lola and Nawel will closely follow the journey. As for Samir who is in remission, he will get back on a bike for the last stage to Hendaye.
Donations for the League Against Cancer
A site has been opened to be able to make donations for the benefit of the National Cancer League, whose representatives from departmental committees will be at the start and finish of stages. Furthermore, the municipalities crossed were requested for local actions. Many flyers will be distributed along the route and the organization invites new partners to join it. Finally, sports associations who wish will be able to ride on portions of the route with cyclists.
