The world is still not ready to face the risk of a new pandemic

While 2024 has already seen 17 major outbreaks, an expert report warns the world is still not ready for the next pandemic. This could occur at any time, amplified by growing risks in social, technological and environmental areas.

Lhe recent epidemics of avian flu (H5N1) which affected several dairy cow farms in the United States or of Marburg virus in Rwanda, without forgetting the return of Mpox (formerly monkey pox) or measles have reminded us that a risk of a pandemic remains possible at any time. This year alone, 17 outbreaks of dangerous diseases have already been recorded, once again highlighting the flaws in the pandemic prevention architecture and the lack of global preparedness to respond to disease outbreaks. In other words, the world is no more ready today than it was when covid took it by surprise.
