In September 2023, the presence of the tiger mosquito became a reality in Sarthe. Until then spared, the department was the only one not to record any colonization sector while sixteen other sectors, spread across the whole of Pays de la Loire, were receiving particular attention from the Regional Health Agency (ARS).
The Suze also colonized
It was in Le Mans that the invasive species, which is a vector of infectious diseases, first established itself. Reports from individuals, particularly in the station area, had also been made to the Inovalys laboratory a few days earlier. Given its dynamic of progression, since its appearance in the south of France in 2004, first along the main roads then by diffusion step by step then, it is probable that it has been transported by vehicle since a colonized place and that it has found the conditions favorable to its proliferation

And that’s not all: since August 13, 2024, the commune of La Suze-sur-Sarthe was declared colonized
further asserts the ARS. As part of vector control against the tiger mosquito and at the request of the Regional Health Agency, the Inovalys laboratory also carried out an awareness-raising action in the town on Wednesday August 14, 2024, Marie-Louise district, and notably in the streets of Mésanges, des Cigognes, des Rouges-Gorges, des Hirondelles, des Alouettes and Saint-Jean-du-Bois.

A municipality is considered colonized when one of the following three conditions is met: “A nesting trap in the monitoring network presents eggs and/or larvae of tiger mosquitoes during three consecutive monthly surveys; the presence of the tiger mosquito is attested by two surveys of nesting traps or two citizen reports more than 500 m apart; or eggs, larvae or adult tiger mosquitoes are observed during an entomological survey more than 150 m from the place of its first location attested by a nest trap survey or a positive citizen report. »
