the essential
As part of World Alzheimer’s Day, FA 09 had put together a great program.

First of all, on September 20, people suffering from Alzheimer’s hit the ball with volunteers from Fuxéen ping-pong (our September 24 edition). Then, on Tuesday October 1, many people came to the “Café-Mémoire” organized by Alzheimer Ariège (FA 09) at the town hall of Albiès. Indeed, the municipality of Albiès has signed the “Ville Aidante Alzheimer” charter, like several towns and villages in Ariège, which establishes a partnership between the France Alzheimer Ariège association and this pretty village in Haute Ariège. Close links have been forged over time and numerous actions have taken place there, each time with strong participation from the population.

Marie-France Basset-Berges, president of the association, gave the welcome speech to a large audience, presenting the full range of actions carried out by FA 09 and the possibilities of aid and support that are available. For this conference, around fifty people were present at the presentation by Philippe Guyon, hearing aid specialist, and Doctor Gafsi, ENT doctor at CHIVA.

Philippe Guyon illustrated his remarks with very explicit slides which clearly show the importance of good hearing throughout life and the need for regular monitoring, particularly after the age of 60. Indeed, beyond normal aging, it is essential to maintain good hearing acuity. Efforts to listen harm the quality of understanding and therefore memorization. In addition, the person who hears poorly tends to isolate himself, which has effects on verbal and cognitive exchanges and which gradually leads to a breakdown in social ties.

We know the importance of cognitive simulation on the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Good hearing contributes to interpersonal relationships and therefore to a better social life.

A small, friendly snack allowed participants to chat with each other and ask more personal questions to the two speakers and the association’s volunteers.

In addition to the numerous workshops and training activities for caregivers, FA09 opens a new field of personal development for caregivers. A free weekly mindfulness meditation workshop will begin on Wednesday, November 6 from 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
