Every year, the flu epidemic reappears. What precautions should be taken? We provide you with the right actions to adopt to avoid infection and its spread.

The flu is a viral infection. To treat it, antibiotics are therefore of no use, since they act against the bacteria. Most of the time, a week of rest and plenty of water is enough to overcome it.

What’s the difference with the common cold?

Flu symptoms affect the upper respiratory tract (nose, throat, bronchi). What differentiates it from the common cold is the sudden rise in temperature (over 38°C). It is also accompanied by aches (muscle and joint pain), cold sweats, headaches, a dry and painful cough, and a general state of malaise (intense fatigue, loss of appetite).

5 actions to avoid the flu and limit its spread

  1. Avoid contact. From the first symptoms of the flu, stay home as much as possible.
  2. Wash your hands several times a day. With a good soap or a hydroalcoholic solution.
  3. Use disposable tissues. Whether it’s blowing your nose, sneezing or coughing. If you don’t have a tissue handy, cough into the crook of your elbow.
  4. Throw away your tissues and wash your hands directly afterwards.
  5. Ventilate your interior. Open your windows wide for 10 to 15 minutes a day, especially in the bedroom, ideally before going to bed and after getting up.

What to do in the event of a flu-like illness?

If the first signs of the flu appear, contact your doctor without delay. Especially if you are one of the people at risk:

  • pregnant women
  • people over 65 years old
  • people placed in institutions
  • people with chronic illness (kidney, lung, heart, hepatic failure, etc.)
  • nursing staff in contact with patients

An effective immune system helps protect against infections like the flu. There are at least three simple tips to adopt every day to boost it.

  • Play sports! Physical exercise, especially endurance exercise, promotes the production of immune cells.
  • Stock up on antioxidants. Make sure you eat a varied diet, rich in fruits and vegetables. They will provide you with vitamins and antioxidants which contribute to the proper regulation of the immune system. The simple technique: eat colorfully.
  • Diffuse tea tree, ravintsara and radiant eucalyptus essential oils. They do not help cure the flu, but can stimulate your natural defenses.
