Fiber, an essential fuel

EThey are the favorite dish of intestinal bacteria. Vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains are full of them. Plant fibers are impossible to break down by our digestive system. They are cut up and fermented by specialized bacteria which thrive and encourage the development of other colonies of bacteria. The more generous the fiber intake, the greater the diversity of bacteria. The microbiota is even more stable and balanced. Better: the bacteria responsible for breaking down fiber produce short-chain fatty acids which have protective anti-inflammatory effects. Be careful to gradually increase the dose of fiber, to give the microbiota time to adapt.

ADVICE : eat pulses twice a week, whole grain products and five servings of fruits and vegetables every day.

Proteins, don’t need too much

Unlike fiber, proteins are normally digested before reaching the colon. But consumed in excess, they pass into the colon and are degraded there by microbiota bacteria specialized in this task. This degradation produces molecules that are toxic to the cells of the intestinal mucosa. Pay particular attention to red meat, rich in heme iron, easily assimilated by the body, but which is also a powerful oxidant, probably carcinogenic.
